On Sunday morning, 17 November 2024, over 5,000 runners, volunteers, and supporters gathered at Singapore’s Marina Barrage for Run For Hope 2024. Against the backdrop of a rising sun and an unwavering sense of purpose, participants embarked on the 5km and 10km routes—not for medals, but for something far greater: the hope for a future free from cancer.

A Legacy of Compassion and Collaboration
Since its inception in 1993 by Four Seasons Hotel Singapore, and through its ongoing partnership with the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) since 2008, Run For Hope has become a beacon of solidarity in Singapore’s running calendar. Though the run is non-competitive, its impact has been profound. Over the years, it has raised more than SGD 1.9 million to advance cancer research, improving diagnosis, treatment, and patient care.
This year alone, Run For Hope 2024 has already raised SGD 190,000—a testament to the commitment of the community. From individual participants to corporate sponsors, the collective effort reflects a shared mission: to push the boundaries of medical science and bring hope to those affected by cancer.
Beyond Running: Stories That Inspire
For many, Run For Hope is deeply personal. It’s an opportunity to honour loved ones affected by cancer and to stand in solidarity with those still fighting the disease. The stories of courage and compassion shared during the event highlight the human impact behind the statistics.
Take Paula O’Callaghan, for instance—a breast cancer survivor who extended her support to her domestic helpers during their cancer battles, providing insurance and attending radiotherapy sessions with them. Her dedication embodies the spirit of the event, showing that care and empathy transcend personal struggles.
Similarly, 18-year-old Jansen Jing’s story is a poignant reminder of how the younger generation is stepping up to make a difference. In the lead-up to Run For Hope, Jansen ran 500 kilometres solo across Japan to raise over $20,000 for cancer research—all while juggling his final year of school. His journey underscores how acts of determination, no matter how small, can ripple into significant change.
A Collective Tribute to Courage
One of the most moving elements of this year’s run was the “Bibs of Bravery” wall, where participants dedicated their race bibs to loved ones or personal heroes. Each bib pinned to the wall carried a story, a name, or a memory, creating a powerful visual tribute to the lives touched by cancer.
Prof Lim Soon Thye, CEO of NCCS, emphasised the significance of these efforts:
Most of us have had a loved one who has been affected by cancer. Every step taken at Run For Hope supports the tireless work of NCCS doctors and researchers who are improving cancer care and giving hope to all who are diagnosed with this disease.
The Power of Community in the Fight Against Cancer
Events like Run For Hope demonstrate the profound impact of community-driven initiatives. Beyond the funds raised, they highlight the role of collective action in fostering hope and advancing medical research.
As Mr John Wu, Regional Director of Engineering at Four Seasons Hotel Singapore and Chairman of Run For Hope, aptly put it,
Every effort, no matter how small, contributes to a larger mission. Together, we are fostering hope and paving the way for advancements in cancer care that can change lives.
Moving Forward: How You Can Help
The fight against cancer doesn’t end with the finish line. Contributions to Run For Hope remain open until 31 December 2024, providing an opportunity for even more individuals to support this vital cause. Whether through monetary donations or spreading awareness, every effort adds a brick to the path toward a cancer-free future.
Cancer affects millions worldwide, yet events like Run For Hope remind us of humanity’s collective strength and determination. By uniting for a common cause, we not only raise funds but also nurture hope—a powerful force that propels progress and ignites change.
