This year’s Big Splash Mizuno Wave Run 2013 had plenty of reasons to rejoice. Not only was this the very first running event organized and launched by Big Splash, collaborators National Parks Board (NParks) also celebrated its 50th anniversary for making Singapore a greener place, with Mizuno being title sponsors.
More than 1,700 runners participated in the 10KM Competitive Categories as well as the 5KM Fun Run. Flagging off at the Big Splash, the 5KM Fun Run participants took the familiar track alongside the coastline, while the 10KM Competitive runners went further, looping around East Coast Lagoon and Bedok Jetty before U-turning back to the starting line.
Bernard Mwendia took first place for the 10KM Competitive Male category, clocking in at a blazing fast 30 minutes 47 seconds, which Carolyne Jepkosgei Chepkwony had a strong finish with a time of 37 minutes 09 seconds in the Women’s category.
Back on the main stage at the Big Splash, runners gathered around for the after-race attractions. The IML Dance Crew busted out some cool dance moves, while a diverse range of sponsor booths such as Mizuno, Coolcore, NParks, The Seafood International Restaurant, and NTUC Media Lifestyle Magazine also provided entertainment and refreshment to thirsty (and hungry) runners. Those who wanted some muscle relief also headed over to the Sports Relief Therapy booth for a muscle rubdown. For the young ones, J Kids Amusement also provided smiles and laughter with plenty of popcorn and candy.
A lucky few also got to take home some prizes, with Big Splash Running Club and Seafood International Restaurant vouchers up for grabs in the sponsored lucky draw. The second prize was a Soleus timepiece, and the lucky draw grand prize was an Apple iPad.
Gino Koh, the General Manager of Big Splash, gave his thoughts on this year’s run,
“We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to all participants, valued partners and sponsors who came together and made this run a great success. We look forward to receiving the same or even stronger support for our run next year to provide an even better experience for everyone!”
Judging by the fact that participants were not fazed at all by the rain, runners will definitely be looking for a splashing fun run next year as well.
