With Thematic Family Camps during the school holiday period, young families can now look forward to it. The Thematic Family Camps was officially opened by Mr. Khaw Boon Wan, Minister for Transport, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Adviser for Sembawang GRC, at People’s Association Water Venture (Sembawang) on 22 April 2018, Sunday.
PBM, Grassroots Advisor for Sembawang GRC, Dr Lim Wee Kiak said:
We have seen an increase in the number of young families in the Sembawang GRC as a result of the increase in the number of Build-to-Order (BTO) HDB flats in the neighbourhood. These families, who reside in the vicinity of the campsite, can leverage on these Thematic Family Camps to spend some quality time bonding together in the great outdoors.
Mr Vijay Kumar Jakka and his family, who are residents in Sembawang were one of the young families that took part in the Family Science Camp together. He said:
Learning Astronomy through stargazing is definitely the highlight of this camp! It is an unforgettable moment where my family and I lay down together and enjoy the sky without light pollution. It is also a very good opportunity for me to let my children take a break before their exams start. From this camp, I also got to know more neighbours living in this neighbourhood!
Various Thematic Family Camps
The Thematic Family Camps include Science Camp, Pets Camp, and ECO Camp which will be held during the June and November school holiday. The camps will take advantage of the outdoor playground and Sembawang heritage using place-based concept. They provide opportunities for families who have similar opinions to interact and build relationships with one another through the hands-on activities.
Each camp will be taking on a different theme with different objectives and specific activities that will appeal to various interests. Multi-generational family time is encouraged as families of up to eight family members can sign up for the camps.
What other things are there?
A family-friendly carnival will be held at the Water-Venture, which is situated close to Sembawang Park, where participants can take the opportunity to indulge in various outdoor land and water activities while soaking in the beauty of diverse flora and fauna. It is a perfect getaway from the concrete jungle, the venue will also be offering movie screening under the stars, music festival and other suburb programmes to attract PMETs.
Thematic Family Camps dates
1. Pets Camp
When: 2 – 3 June
Aim of camp:
- Learn about the responsibilities of being a pet owner.
- Experience being a pet owner through pet handling workshops.
- Encourage adoption of pets.
2. Science Camp
When: 9 – 10 June
Aim of camp:
- Astronomy through star gazing.
- Marine Creature through Intertidal Walk.
- Flora and fauna through the Forest Walk.
3. Eco Camp
When: 16 -17 June
Aim of camp:
- Understand the importance of taking ownership in conserving the environment.
- Learn to upcycle through hands-on workshops.
- Experience coastal clean-up/Kayak & Klean with family.
Family Aqua Carnival
The Family Aqua Carnival @ Sembawang will be held concurrently with one of the Thematic Family Camps, the 2D1N Family Science Camp held next door.
