How does it feel to run in a country which was infested with millions of land mines. Although time has erased some of the mines, but it could not erase the anguish and torment caused by the mines. The landmines have caused adverse socio-economic impacts on the community however, the fear of the landmines did not stop 7,871 runners from all around the world participating in the Ankor Wat International Half Marathon last year.
The annual race was started in 1996 by NGO who raises relief for the victims of antipersonnel mines in Cambodia as well as to appeal to the world to support the ban on the manufacture and inhumane use of antipersonnel mines.
Supported by various organisations and the principal sponsor – Manulife, the race will flag off on Sunday, 6 December 2015 from 5:30 a.m., in front of Angkor Wat temple, Siem Reap, Cambodia. There will be 3 categories, 21 K, 10 K and 3 K.
By participating in the race, the entry fees and additional financial support will help landmine victims by providing prosthetic limbs, social reintegration programs, and supporting other relevant and needed programs such as education and prevention of HIV / AIDS.
The Angkor Wat International Half Marathon is a flat and unique course inside the world heritage area with ancient trees along the route. There are many ancient temples along the course and the runners can take photos during the race.
