You may have run through arid deserts, tropical jungles, or even snow-capped mountains. But have you ever run in the happiest country in the world?
Bhutan is famously known for being the only country in the world that measures the progress of society in terms of “Gross National Happiness”. Experience the charm and magic of one of the world’s most secret countries as you run 200km over 6 stages in Bhutan – The Last Secret!
Immerse Yourself in the Rich, Unique Bhutanese Buddhist Culture
Bhutan – The Last Secret is designed as a full board event, meaning that meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) will be provided at each camp, accompanied by non-alcoholic drinks.
The official start point is at Punakha Dzong, (The Palace of Great Happiness and Bliss), which is the second largest and oldest dzong (traditional Architecture) in Butan. Most of the course takes place in remote areas not accessible by vehicles. After each stage, runners and race organisers will stay in a traditional monastery located 3,500m above sea level, quaint farmhouses more than a century old, where the terrain is too rugged, tents that are overlooking the scenic mountainous landscape.
Along the way, you will experience an amazing landscape, run through evergreen prime forests, pass amazing Bhutanese monasteries and immerse yourself in the local Buddhist culture. Run through rural villages and cross 3 breathtakingly scenic mountain passes that are over 3,500m above sea level. Certain highlights include lodging in the Phajodong Monastery, where the resident monks will be more than happy to play a round of soccer with you!
After a gruelling 200km over 6 days, finish the race at the most spectacular and mystic monastery on earth, hanging in the cliffs at an altitude of 3000m with an outstanding view to the Paro valley, the Taktshang Goemba, also known as “The Tiger’s Nest”.
Stay Longer and Discover the Mystical Beauty of Bhutan
If you are interesting in staying longer to learn more about the “Happiest Place in the World”, there are multiple post-race extension programs for you. Amongst other things, you will get to visit the Rimpung Dzong, which was originally a Bhutanese watchtower. It was converted into the National Museum in 1968, and the central tower (Utse) of the Dzong, with the superb woodwork, is one of the most beautiful in the nation. All post-race extension programs will provide an English-speaking guide, driver and more.
Bhutan is a unique blend of the old and new. Here is a country that is slowly opening up to the modern world in a fine balance with its ancient traditions. Those fortunate enough to visit Bhutan describe it as a unique, deeply spiritual and mystical experience.
