13 years after plans for a new National Stadium were announced, the Singapore Sports Hub opened its doors to the public on 30 June 2014.
In total, its facilities occupy around 350,000 square metres. That’s almost the size of 50 football fields!
From world-class facilities to visiting the Sports Museum situated nearby, here are 6 reasons why you should visit the brand new S$1.3 billion Sports Hub.
1. To Run, of Course!
How often is it that you get to run in a national icon?
Equipped with 74 athletic tracks and 116 jogging tracks, the Sports Hub is definitely a must-go for all runners. Set to have the world’s largest free-spanning dome, the Singapore Sports Hub is an iconic addition to the country’s skyline.
2. Convenience is Key
Situated at 2 Stadium Walk, the Sports Hub is only a 2 minutes’ walk away from its nearest MRT station, the Stadium on the Circle Line. Forget about boring neighborhood jogs or dull jogging routes. Opt for something new!
3. World-Class Facilities are Free till 17 August 2014!
With world-class facilities built in accordance to international guidelines, you can enjoy other sports at the Sports Hub!
These sports facilities are free for public use till 17 August 2014. From rock climbing walls to netball courts; you name it, the Sports Hub has it!
If you love swimming, be sure to enjoy the world-class training, diving and Olympic-sized competition pools too.
There will also be tryouts for various sports with equipment and guidance from coaches, held on Fridays and Saturdays. Do note that booking is required for some of the facilities and guided tours.
Furthermore, the National Stadium West entrance, Gate 1 will now be opened every weekend until 18 August for public to access a viewing platform starting this coming Saturday (26 July).
In addition to the National Day celebrations, Sports Hub will be screening the National Day Parade ‘live’ on 9th August.
4. Done with Sports? Time to Shop!
For retail shopaholics, the Kallang Wave Retail Mall is located right beside the Sports Hub! Named after the old National Stadium and the wave-like contours of the mall, well-known fashion brands such as Uniqlo, H&M and Forever 21 have opened retail outlets in the mall.
Overlooking Kallang Basin and Marina Bay, be prepared to shop till you drop! There are also lots of sales and promotional prices not to be missed!
5. There is More to the Kallang Wave Retail Mall!
If your tummy is grumbling after a run, you’ll be spoilt for choice at the number of dining options available here.
Other than shopping, there are also restaurants, a food court, and an NTUC Fairprice XTRA outlet as well.
The NTUC FairPrice Xtra out, which will feature a sports theme, is one of the main highlights of the Sports Hub.
NTUC FairPrice spokesman Tan Kian Chew says the hypermart will offer a good selection of bicycles, sporting equipment, accessories and sportswear, as well as organic produce on top of the usual groceries, household products and appliances.
Atrium Events will also be held every now and then – ranging from kids’ activities to sports activities to art competitions, it sure serves more than just a mall!
The Kallang Wave Retail Mall is also the first environmentally-friendly transit mall. The insulation in the roof cladding and giant louvres, for example, minimise the heat from the sun.
There is also a library and museum just opposite the mall, which are both free for Singaporeans and permanent residents.
6. In or Out of Sports Hub – It is Always a Good Place to Run
Situated right outside the Sports Hub, the Stadium Riverside Walk is a walkway by the Singapore River, offering a great view of the gorgeous city skyline. Whoever said best things don’t come together?
Runners taking part in the Straits Times Run on 28 September 2014 will definitely have a memorable experience, as they will be the first to complete their run in the National Stadium.
Singapore Sports Hub Offers More than Just Sports
The opening of the Singapore Sports Hub provides an exciting destination for many runners. The new Singapore landmark will not only act as a concert venue, but also a playground to many athletes.
With so many events happening at the Sports Hub, do get everyone together to join in the fun! We also anticipate more runs to incorporate the Sports Hub into their race routes as well!
