With its unique distance of 18KM and 32 KM, the Newton Challenge is intended for a sort of “transition distance” for runners. Starting and ending at Big Splash in East Coast Park, the Newton Challenge is an excellent choice for runners looking to work up to the half or full marathon experience.
But that didn’t mean that it was a simple walk in the park. Coming by the determined looks, it seems many runners took the pleasant weather and familiar surroundings of East Coast Park as an incentive to give their very best timings.
The Newton Runners (led by chairman Michael Kang) also made an appearance as pacers. Dressed in bright yellow vests and holding colourful balloons, they led and encouraged participants down the 32KM route.
With a 3 month intensive training program that started from mid-July, their efforts paid off as 29 of 30 pacers finished within their stipulated timings. The remaining pacer suffered severe cramps, but still managed to finish the 32km route.
The excellent beverage and logistical support provided by the race organisers and sponsors meant that runners were well taken care of. Combined with the pleasant Sunday morning weather, runners were content to relax and chat at Big Splash long after the Newton Challenge ended, soaking in the beach atmosphere. Live entertainment and lucky draws were also provided, and lucky winners stood to win prizes like the iPad Mini.
With the Newton Challenge taking off and concluding without a hitch, we are certainly looking forward to 2014’s Challenge!
